    FAO Year 1: Poetry Competition

29 April 2025 (by Ellie Gath (Ellie Gath))

Year 1 will be sent home today with a sheet called 'Sense Poetry' for a poetry competition from Young Writers. If your child wants to take part, please send this back to me by the week starting Monday 12th May.

You may wish to talk them through a topic of their choice for a poem, and ask them about their 5 senses and how they are using these for their chosen topic. The back of the sheet contains some questions for you to write after asking your child. These will then be sent off with the chance to be published into a book. Good luck!

Here is the description from the website:

Sense Poetry is a fun and accessible way to help children explore the world around them using words.

Using a ready-made structure, your child can create a sense poem. Whether it's single-word responses or full descriptive sentences, this poetry style supports vocabulary building, boosts writing confidence, and encourages imagination.

Your child can write about any topic - animals, the seasons, their favourite food... anything at all! It's a wonderful opportunity for them to see their work in print and write for a purpose.
